WhatsApp’s HD Photo Sharing Feature Unveiled: WhatsApp has begun spreading out high-definition photo sharing to all of its users. Meta will spread out the feature to users over the next few weeks. With the latest update, Android and iOS users will be able to share high-quality and high-resolution images in their WhatsApp chats; WhatsApp Web and desktop users will also be able to transmit images with a small ‘HD’ icon. Meta has also announced that transmitting HD videos will soon be supported.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, announced the introduction of the feature via a Facebook post on Thursday. When a user uploads an image to a conversation thread, an HD icon will appear. In June of this year, the feature was tested on the beta channel. HD images are clearer than non-HD images, but they utilise more data and storage space when they are transferred and when they are stored.
WABetaInfo, a feature tracker for WhatsApp, previously disclosed that the app compresses even HD images lightly. The Standard non-HD option will be the default, and users will have to explicitly select the HD option whenever they wish to share a high-quality image.
Meta has not specified how much compression will be applied to HD photographs, nor how they will appear in comparison to images transmitted via Apple’s iMessage or any other competing platform.
It is important to note that HD photos, along with all other media shared on WhatsApp, will also be encrypted end-to-end. Downloading the standard version will be an option for recipients with sluggish Internet connections.
WhatsApp has also introduced a screen-sharing feature for video conversations that resembles the layout of Google Meet or Zoom. The participants of the call are displayed as small rectangular tiles on the right side of the screen, while the shared screen occupies the principal view.
