This prominence gained him the position of Black Sabbath’s lead singer in 1979. In 1982, Dio departed the band to form his own group, Dio. Dio Birthday
Ronnie James Dio Padavona was born on July 10, 1942 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire to parents Patrick and Anna Padavona. As a child, Dio listened to a great deal of opera and was profoundly influenced by the American tenor Mario Lanza. Dio chose the trumpet at age five after his father encouraged him to play an instrument. In 1957, he founded his first rock ‘n’ roll band, The Vegas Kings, while in high school. He played the trumpet, began to sing, and studied bass guitar.
The Vegas Kings underwent numerous name changes between 1958 and 1967, including Ronnie and the Rumblers, Ronnie and the Redcaps, Ronnie Dio and the Prophets (the first use of the pseudonym Dio), The Electric Elves, and ultimately Elf. The band gained prominence and became Deep Purple’s regular opening act. Ritchie Blackmore, the lead singer of Deep Purple, invited Dio and other members of Elf to establish Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow during the mid-1970s. After three albums with Rainbow, Dio was asked to succeed Ozzy Osbourne as Black Sabbath’s lead vocalist. Dio remained with them for two studio albums before establishing Dio in 1982, his own band. The band released ten albums, the most recent of which was “Master of the Moon,” which was released in 2004.
In 2006, Dio toured with Tommy Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice of Black Sabbath under the name Heaven & Hell. The band paid homage to the first Black Sabbath album released during the Dio era. The band released three new compositions in 2007 and completed a 98-day tour of the globe in 2008.
In 2009, Dio was diagnosed with gastric cancer. His final appearance with Heaven & Hell was on August 29, 2009. He perished in 2010.
