Before his wrestling debut, Bálor trained at the NWA UK Hammerlock. In 2011, he also successfully defended his heavyweight title and held it for 364 days. He won the 2013 Best of the Super Juniors Championship, his second victory in the competition. In 2014, he signed a contract with W.W.E. and promptly joined NXT. At NXT Takeover: R Evolution, he defeated “The Ascension” with the assistance of Hideo Itami. Later that year, he also won the NXT Takeover: Rivals.

He was the longest-reigning NXT Champion in 2015. Bálor was selected as the fifth-overall wrestler for Raw in the 2016 W.W.E. draught and defeated other competitors to earn the opportunity to compete for the W.W.E. Universal Championship. He defeated Seth Rollins and claimed his first world championship, as well as the inaugural Universal Championship. After three years with Raw and a brief television sabbatical, Bálor returned to NXT in 2019 and continued to compete and win championships.
