Sumitra Mahajan Early years
Sumitra Mahajan was born into a Chitpavan Brahmin Marathi family in Chiplun, Maharashtra, to Usha and Purushottam Sathe. After marrying Jayant Mahajan of Indore, she completed her MA and LLB at Indore University (now Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya). Sumitra Mahajan enjoys literature, music, theatre, and film in addition to her passion for singing. She has cited the 18th-century queen Ahilyabai Holkar as her inspiration throughout her life and has authored a book on Ahilyabai Holkar’s life journey titled ‘Matoshree’, which was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2017.

Political career
In 1982, Sumitra Mahajan began her political career as a member of the Indore Municipal Corporation. In 1984, she was elected as the Deputy Mayor of Indore Municipal Corporation. Lok Sabha elections, she stood for the first time and defeated former chief minister and senior Congress leader Prakash Chandra Sethi in 1989. Within her constituency, she is popularly known as Tai.

Anil Kumar Dhadwaiwale, former chairman of the Maharashtra Brahmin Cooperative Bank in Indore, alleged that Sumitra Mahajan and her son Milind Mahajan played crucial roles in the bank’s 1997-2003 frauds.[13] During this time, Sumitra Mahajan served as a minister in the Central Government.
Milind Mahajan was one of the bank’s directors when the alleged fraud occurred. In 2005, an FIR was filed at the Central Kotwali Police Station in Indore against sixteen individuals, including Milind Mahajan. However, it was removed following the investigation. Numerous directors, including the spouse of Sumitra Mahajan’s private secretary, obtained the loan. But did not pay.
