Early Life
Vishnuvardhan was born to H. L. Narayana Rao and Kamakshamsa in Mysore. The origin of his progenitors is Hallegere, Mandya District, Karnataka. His father was an artist, composer, and screenwriter who amassed an extensive collection of musical instruments. There were six brothers and sisters in his family. His sister Rama was a Kathak performer at the Mysore Palace, and his brother Ravi was a child actor in the Tamil and Kannada bilingual film Modala Thedi, released in 1955. Initially, he attended Gopalswamy School in Mysore, followed by Kannada High School in Bangalore. He completed his secondary education at National College, Basavanagudi, Bangalore.
The progenitors of Vishnuvardhan’s father H L Narayana Rao were from Hallegere, Mandya, Karnataka. He himself was involved in the creative arts, having written for films such as Naagaarjuna (1961), Vidhi Vilasa (1962), and Shri Dharmasthala Mahatme (1962).
Rama, Vishnuvardhan’s sister, is a renowned Kathak performer who has performed at Mysore Palace and other prestigious venues.

Vishnuvardhan married Bharati in Bangalore on February 17, 1975. She was his co-star in films such as Bhagya Jyothi, Devara Gudi, Anna Attige, and Mane Belagida Sose, among others, at the time. They have two daughters, whose names are Keerthi and Chandana Vishnuvardhan.

Film Industry Career
In Vamsha Vruksha(1971), a 1972 Kannada Drama film directed by Girish Karnad & B V Karanth based on a story by S. L. Bhyrappa, Vishnuvardhan made his debut in a minor role.
However, his first film in the principal role was Naagarahaavu (1972), a blockbuster of the year and one of the most revolutionary films in the history of the Kannada film industry. It was directed by the legendary S R Puttanna Kanagal, with Aarathi, K S Ashwath, M Leelavathi, Ambareesh, and S Shivaram in the cast.
As a writer, Vishnuvardhan has attempted scripts for a few films, including Lion Jagapathi Rao and Ganesha I Love You, both of which are well-written and praised for their scripts.
He appeared as Venkat Rao in the Shankar Nag-directed television series Malgudi Days. The serial was broadcast on DD National and distributed nation-wide.
