70% of students in coveted medical schools will be from 9 states: This year, over 70% of students enrolling in the MBBS programme at elite medical schools will be from nine states. Nearly 65 percent of candidates who scored 400 or higher on the NEET-UG 2023 examination are from eight states: Bihar, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. In the range of 620 and above, Delhi replaces Bihar in the top eight.
While it would be difficult for candidates in the ‘general’ and ‘OBC’ categories to gain admission to a government medical institution with a NEET score of 400, nearly 66% of candidates with a score of 620 or higher are from these states.

11.4 lakh candidates passed NEET-UG 2023, the results of which were released on 13 May, and are eligible to participate in the counselling procedure. The total number of candidates who scored 400 or higher on the NEET is 2,300,000, while the number of candidates with scores between 500 and 619 is over 45,000.
This year, 18,757 candidates scored 620 or higher (out of 720) on the exam.This year, 1,04,333 MBBS seats (54,278 in government medical colleges) and 27,868 BDS seats are available. In addition, there are 52,720 seats for Ayush programmes and 603 seats for BVSc (bachelor of veterinary science) and animal husbandry. NEET-UG scores are also used to determine admission to bachelor’s programmes in homoeopathic and Unani medicine.
Rajasthan has the maximum proportion (12.3%) of those with scores of 400 or higher, followed by Uttar Pradesh (11.8%) and Maharashtra (9.0%). 64.3% of the candidates.
There are 322 government medical colleges, with the maximum number of seats in Tamil Nadu (over 5,200), followed by Maharashtra (over 4,800) and Uttar Pradesh (over 4,300). Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan, and West Bengal are the other states with over 3,000 government college seats apiece.
In government medical colleges, seats are filled under two categories: 15% under AIQ (All India Quota) for those residing outside the state, and the remainder under state quota.
This year, 64,520 candidates achieved a NEET score of 550 or higher, with the majority hailing from Delhi, Kerala, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. The state with the most candidates is Rajasthan (16.8%), followed by Uttar Pradesh (12.2%) and Maharashtra (8.8%). While Bihar is in the top eight for the mark range of up to 619, Delhi replaces it in the range of 620 and above with 7.2% of the total number of candidates.
