Both fictional and nonfictional books contain fantastical realms. They enable us to gain new perspectives on all aspects of life, mortality, and beyond. By reading, we improve our vocabulary and other linguistic abilities. Additionally, reading is an excellent means to comprehend and develop emotional skills such as empathy. Recognising the numerous advantages of paperback books, such as their portability, publishers opted for the much more cost-effective option of softcovers/softbacks over hardcovers/hardbacks.

The background of Paperback Book Day

Paperback Book Day is a celebration of the voyage that paperback books have taken since their inception. When people consider paperback histories, they often think of the English publishing house Penguin. It is true that paperbacks gained widespread popularity when Penguin began commercialising the concept in the 20th century, but the history of paperbacks dates back to the 17th century. European nations such as Germany and France were already publishing stories and newspapers in a format resembling a paperback at the time. James Fenimore Cooper, an American author, also published comparable frontier stories. With the invention of the printing press and other publication technologies, an increasing number of similar paperback novels were published on a larger scale. In actuality, the ‘dime novels’ and ‘penny dreadfuls’ of the publishing industry are the result of the same business phenomenon.

Returning to Penguin, its proprietor, Allen Lane, was going bankrupt due to his publishing company, The Bodley Head, experiencing a severe downturn in the 1930s, at the onset of the Great Depression. Lane was travelling with Agatha Christie and her spouse on a train. At the time, Christie’s works had already been published by Lane’s publishing house. Lane was concerned about his faltering business and was searching for a solution to save it. While waiting for his train, he perused a station kiosk in search of something to read. After discovering nothing but magazines and low-quality paperback fiction, he realised he could capitalise on the concept of high-quality paperbacks, which would increase profits by allowing more people to access excellent fiction at lower prices. From then on, publishers and consumers favoured paperback books. Many new books are published in paperback before they are published in hardcover.
