Union Day 2023: Date, History and Facts about Myanmar

Union Day is a national holiday in Myanmar on February 12th. This holiday commemorates the signing and ratification of the Panglong Agreement in 1947, which united Burma. In theory, the agreement acknowledged complete autonomy in governance for the Frontier Areas and envisioned the Constituent Assembly establishing a Kachin State.

HISTORY OF UNION DAY

Union Day commemorates the 1947 Panglong Conference, which occurred in the months leading up to the nation’s independence from the British. According to accounts, the conference in the hill town of Panglong was crucial in bringing the diverse multi-ethnic people of the country together to form a cohesive and eventually sovereign nation.

Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) came under British administration in 1886, but the British made a distinction between the governance of central Burma and the surrounding ethnic groups.

General Aung San, the leader of the interim Burmese government, met at Panglong with leaders from the Shan states, the Kachin hills, and the Chin hills to discuss Burma’s future after World War II. On February 12, 1947, they reached an agreement that was signed and passed. The agreement reunited Burma and required the British administration to grant independence to all of Burma.

Aung San, Myanmar’s national hero and interim president, along with a few ethnic minority leaders who agreed to join the Union of Burma in exchange for federal authority, signed the Panglong Agreement.

Since it paved the way for Burma’s independence in January 1948, the agreement was a pivotal moment in Myanmar’s history. The agreement also permitted ethnic leaders to secede from the union if they were dissatisfied with the new country.

Aung San, on the other hand, did not witness the independence of Burma. On July 19, 1947, just months before the country’s independence, he was executed. Then, in 1962, a military coup inaugurated nearly fifty years of army dictatorship. In 1989, Burma was renamed Myanmar by the military government.
