Observed to honour labs in all their splendour — from industrial labs to government and military-led laboratories to educational labs and even spacecraft — World Laboratory Day highlights how these controlled environments have benefited humanity since the dawn of time. The background of World Laboratory Day

Laboratories have existed since antiquity, although they may not have resembled the laboratories we envision today. These laboratories ranged from home-based to alchemist workshops and frequently involved the preparation of medicine. Pythagoras (570 B.C. – 490 B.C.) was a renowned ancient Ionian Greek philosopher and scientist who owned the world’s earliest laboratory (to date). According to reports, he utilised this laboratory to test his hypotheses on string and tone vibrations.

Obviously, the term ‘laboratory’ was not used in this precise context. Since the Middle Ages, the Latin root of ‘laboratory’ — ‘laboratorium,’ meaning ‘exertion, endeavour, or work’ — has been used, but only in reference to actual work or tasks. In the late 16th century, the term progressively referred to the specialised workshops of alchemists and apothecaries, and by the next century, it had acquired its current meaning.

The nineteenth century introduced a new epoch of study. Chemistry, physics, and biology began to recognise the need for research and laboratories. Once a predominantly solo activity, research is now increasingly conducted in groups. During this time period, specialised architecture was also created to house these centres of education and research. The laboratory was currently undergoing a transformation into an educational institution hub.

With the Second World War, research became an international priority. The Second World War drove global science and research to unprecedented heights, resulting in an unprecedented expansion of laboratories. The creation of new equipment, procedures, and devices. Numerous nations, including Germany, Switzerland, China, and the United States, established large-scale research laboratories that changed the world, and some of these still exist today.

While the origins of this holiday are unknown, its purpose is crystal clear: to honour these great spaces of knowledge and innovation, as well as the individuals who labour within them.
