In ancient times, the causes of dental issues were poorly understood. In a Sumerian text from 5000 B.C., tooth worms were described as the cause of dental caries; this theory was not disproven until the 1700s.
International Retainer Day is observed every year on July 19. This day challenges you to maintain your attractive smile after dental treatment by wearing your retainer. International Retainer Day recognises the importance of retainers, which help users maintain a straight and beautiful face for years following orthodontic treatment.
Early in the 20th century, retainers were developed to prevent teeth from shifting laterally. The expression remained unaltered as a result. Following orthodontic treatment, if you do not wear your retainer, your teeth may migrate or revert to their previous incorrect positions. If you have been procrastinating on your retainer payments, the time has come to get back on track.
In ancient times, the causes of dental issues were poorly understood. In a Sumerian text from 5000 B.C., tooth worms were described as the cause of dental caries; this theory was not disproven until the 1700s.
Since more than 2,000 years ago, humans have been coping with tooth pain and rearranging teeth. Archaeologists have discovered devices used to treat’malocclusion’ — abnormal alignment of the teeth and mandible — on mummified remains from the Egyptian empire. Wrapped around teeth have been discovered crude metal objects. Pierre Fauchard became known as the ‘Father of Modern Dentistry’ because he invented modern orthodontics. His device utilised string and flat metal strips to bind the molars together.
Despite its crudeness, this apparatus was more comparable to modern orthodontic retainers. Individual connectors were placed on each tooth of Fauchard’s orthodontics, enabling more precise adjustment. Since then, orthodontics has evolved to provide more comfortable treatments, such as the addition of wires and elastic bands in the middle of the 19th century.
Dr. Charles Hawley invented the adjustable retainer that permits orthodontic adjustments. It continues to be one of the most well-known techniques for protecting tooth alignment.
The 1993 invention of John Sheridan, the Essix retainer, is gaining in popularity. This retainer model allows for the preservation of teeth alignment while being substantially less obtrusive than the Hawley model. It is made from thin, transparent P.V.C, making it less conspicuous when worn. Users can wear these retainers without having their speech affected or their expressions obscured.
Currently, dental patients have a variety of options to choose from. That is certainly something to rejoice about!

Regardless of dental care, human teeth have a tendency to alter with age.
Teeth are not firmly embedded in the jawbones; periodontal ligaments hold them in position.
There are two primary varieties of retainers: removable and fixed.
Before the invention of anaesthesia, patients had to endure the excruciating agony of dental procedures.
Teeth are the only element of the human body incapable of self-repair.
