Philippine president visits quake-hit area as residents shelter outside

Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos promised on Thursday to help rebuild homes damaged by a powerful earthquake on the island of Luzon, as terrified residents camped out in parks and on sidewalks after hundreds of aftershocks rattled the area. Northern Luzon provinces are among the country’s biggest growers of rice and vegetables. Ricardo Jalad, the administrator of the Office of the Civil Defense, told radio station DZRH that some parts of Abra were still without power or water and experiencing communication outages.

The budget ministry said authorities were ready to release funds for disaster relief.
