VA Death Benefits for Cremation – What’s Covered and Beyond

The VA is offering burial benefits to veterans, their families, guardians, and orphans, covering gravesite, burial, funeral, and remains transfer. The benefits include more time for reimbursement, higher single payment rates, and Tribal groups receiving plot or interment allowances.

VA Death Benefits for Cremation: Veterans, their families, guardians, and orphans can get burial benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). These benefits can help pay for a Veteran’s gravesite, burial, funeral, and transfer of their remains.

Our goal is to help people who pay for funerals but don’t get paid back. The new benefits include more time to get transportation costs reimbursed to state or Tribal Veterans’ graves, a higher single payment rate for funeral benefits that aren’t related to service, and the ability for Tribal groups to receive a plot or interment allowance from the VA.

Over 84,000 burial benefits were given by the VA in the last fiscal year. Veterans, their families, guardians, and survivors are supported by the VA at their final resting places.

What do funeral benefits pay for?

Burning, burial at sea, and giving the body to a medical school are legal burials covered by funeral benefits. Benefits can be given to people who are eligible, like living partners, children, parents, or executors of the Veteran’s estate.

Veterans should take advantage of the VA’s end-of-life benefits, which include life insurance, the choice of how to be cared for, benefits for a child, and burial benefits that can be asked for ahead of time.

For non-service-connected burial benefits, you have two years from the date of burial or cremation to file.

VA gives different funeral payments for people who died while serving and people who died while not serving. For service-related deaths, the most you can get for a funeral plot is $2,000. For non-service-related deaths after October 1, 2023, you can get a $948 burial plot and a $948 burial fee.

Expanded memorial benefits are in line with VA’s promise to help Veterans and their families through the end-of-life process by covering the costs of the service and burial.

Eligible people can fill out VA Form 21P-530 and apply for these benefits. Funeral directors, local or state VA offices, or calling VA at 800-827-1000 can help.
